Bionic Ear Institute Open Day

The Bionic Ear Institute is having their open day for prospective students on the 4th of September, from 4 til 6pm, at 384 Albert St., East Melbourne. Please RSVP to Anne Coco by August 28. Here is an information sheet.

Given I’m a BEI flunky, I’d be remiss not to promote this particular event. While the BEI has, as one might imagine, focused on hearing research, it has now expanded to a number of medical bionics projects. These include devices for epilepsy control, targeted drug delivery, spinal repair, as well as the recently-publicised Australian bionic eye.

The institute is, in a very practical sense, multi-disciplinary. Cell biologists, molecular biologists, electrophysiologists, engineers, physicists, mathematicians, clinicians and more are all represented in the development of new medical devices and therapies, as well as basic research. We have labs at the Eye & Ear Hospital, St. Vincents Hospital, and the University of Melbourne. And, with all honesty, it’s a pretty fun and exciting place to work/study. Please think about dropping by, and I’ll attempt to convince you further in person. And, yes, refreshments will be provided.
